Defying Gravity.
By Kevin Williams
If you're in the mood for yet another coming out story, this low budget independent film might be just what your VCR has been hungry for. Griff (Daniel Chilson) is a So. Cal. College student with a boyfriend or f%$#-buddy (he's not sure which) named Pete. (Don Handfield.) When Pete begins to ask for more from Griff than secret sex, Griff fears his hoop shooting, keg partying, frat-house days might be numbered. The pressure on Griff quickly intensifies when Pete is Gay bashed, and Griff is the only one who can identify the truck driven by Pete's attackers. What is a closeted guy to do? Tell the cops what he saw and explain to his frat brothers why he was in West Hollywood (the Gay part of town) to see it? Or let the man he's coming to realize that he loves, lay comatose in a hospital bed while his attackers go free?
Okay I'll say it before you do, the story does have a real ABC After School Special vibe going, but the acting, especially the supporting cast, makes it ring more true than it could have. I really enjoyed the friendship between Griff and his Straight frat brother Todd (Niklaus Lange,) whose written and played as a totally stand up guy. There's also a side story about the bond that develops between Griff and Demetra (Linn Carter,) a black female classmate who's also in the closet. Griff and Demetra's burgeoning friendship evokes reactions from their very separate group of friends, which forces all of them to face the self-induced segregation on campus. Linn Carter's strong yet quiet performance is a real standout.
For those of you waiting for the eye-candy report wait no more! If you're into the hunky college type, in this video the hotties abound. There is no nudity, but more than a few shirts leave their wearer, thrilling the friend I saw this flick with. Personally, I have to give a shout-out to the guy who played Pete's Dad. My man was putting the "T" in tasty! This movie has something to say while giving you something to look at.
